Jim graduated from the Mount Pleasant High School in 1976 and was one of the top middle di stance and cross country runners in the state. His coach was Bill Crowther. During high school his PR’s for the 880 were 1:56.5, mile – 4:23.8, and 2 mile – 9:38. He was the 3000 meter Delaware State Outdoor Champion in ’76, Blue Hen Conference Cross Country Champion in ’73 & ’75, and the runner up Delaware Cross Country Champion in ’75 and was selected to the Phila/DE All-Area Cross Country team in his senior year as well as a High School All American in ‘76.
He continued his career at the University of Delaware where he was a four-year letter winner in indoor and outdoor track & field, graduating in 1980.
His coach was Jimmy Flynn. He held four UD track & field records including the indoor 1000 yd (2:12.8) (still holds the record), outdoor 800 m (1:52.7), indoor distance medley, and ran a 1:51.7 split on the record setting outdoor sprint medley.
He consistently placed in large invitational meets and the ECC conference meets as well as qualifying for a number of IC4A championships. During his college career (1976-1980), the UD outdoor track & field team won the ECC Team Championship all four years. He was named a co-captain his senior year with Eddie McCreary.
