Michael was a highly accomplished high hurdler. He attended De La Warr (1977-78) and William Penn High School (1979-80), where he won the state 110m high hurdle championship twice, in 1979 (14.7) and 1980 (14.3) as well as the Meet of Champions in 1980. During these years, he also secured victories at the New Castle County (14.5) meet and the Glasgow Invitational meet.
While at Delaware State University (1980-1985), Michael won the Delaware State Invitational in 1982. He also set Delaware States University school record in the hurdles (14.1) He earned championship point in the MEAC Indoor Conference Championships by placing second (7.44) and 3rd in the Outdoor Championships (14.4). He was also part of a championship-winning 4x100m relay team that won their college Championship Division at the Penn Relays in 1984.
As a master Michael place third in the 1999 USATF National Masters Outdoor Championships in Orlan-do, FL. In 2000 he was the men’s 35 age group national champion in the men’s 110-meter-high hurdles. Indoors, he was a national champion in the 60m high hurdles in 2000 and place 3rd in 2001 & second in 2002. In 2004 he placed 4th in the World Indoor Masters Championship in the same event.
