This Tower Hill grad is arguably one of the best jumpers in Delaware high school history. He won numerous state titles in the long jump, triple jump, and high jump. In 1977, he was ranked the top high school sophomore in the country by Track & Field News with a triple jump of 49’ 2-1/2″ at the Atlanta Track Classic.

He won the New Castle Country long jump and triple jump three times each, and the state final long jump and triple jump twice each as well as the Penn Relays triple jump championship in 1979 with a jump of 47’ 9″. Ty is 13th (22’ 10-1/4″) on the All-Time high school long jump list and 2nd (49’ 2-1/2″) on the All-Time triple jump list. He also registered a 23’ 9″ wind-aided long jump in winning the state individual final in 1979.

While competing for Cape Henlopen H. S., Willie won 10 gold medals (tying for 3rd place on the Delaware H.S. All-time Gold Medal List) at the Division II State Outdoor Championships. In 1994, he helped Cape win the Division II State Championship by winning 4 individual championships (110m HH in :14.86; 300m HH in :40.17; HJ at 6’6″; LJ at 21’ 3″). He has accumulated 14 State Champion gold medals: 10 gold medals outdoors and 4 gold medals indoors.

In 1992, he was the State Indoor Track “Athlete of the Year”. Willie’s versatility is shown by his records on the Delaware High School All-Time Performance Lists (Indoors: High Jump at 6’4″, 14th place tie; Long Jump at 22’ 0-3/4″, 15th place tie; Triple Jump at 46’ 3″, 9th place, and Outdoors: High Jump at 6’ 8-1/2″, 6th place; Triple Jump at 47’ 2-1/4″, 12th place).

This 1967 graduate of A.I. DuPont High School competed mostly in the 100, 220 and high jump. In his senior year, he anchored the State Indoor Champion Mile Relay team and placed 4th in the 220 at the Outdoor State meet. After graduation he competed for Butler University where in most meets he participated in 6 events – 100, 200, high Jump,4 x 100 relay, long jump and triple jump. He qualified three times for the NCAA Championships, placing fifth in the long jump at the 1970 indoor championships.

His Butler U. records of 24’10-1/2″ indoor and 25’7″ outdoor in the long jump and 47’4-1/4″ indoor and 50’2″ outdoor in the triple jump still stand three decades later. He broke or tied more than forty track & field records during his four years at Butler University. He won Butler’s Andy William’s Award for leadership (1971), the Scott Ham Outstanding Track Athlete Award (1970 and 1971), and the Indiana Collegiate Conference (ICC) Track Man of the Year (1970 and 1971). In 1971, he was victorious in eight events in the ICC Championship Meet.

He was inducted into the Butler University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT:

1972 UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE MILE RELAY TEAM

This 1972 University of Delaware Mile Relay team set the School Record with a time of 3:14.2, finishing 4th in the Penn Relays IC4A race, a time that still stands as the School Record and also converts to a 3:13.0 for the 4 x 400 meters.

The team consisted of four local athletes who were non scholarship athletes. Running leadoff was Lloyd Mears (Georgetown/Sussex Central) with a time of 48.9y (48.6m). Running second leg was Peter Sukalo (Christiana) whose split was 49.2y (48.9m). Third leg was turned in by John Flickinger (Christiana) with a split of 48.2y (47.9m) who handed off to Ed Mongan (Tower Hill) a Track Hall of Fame Inductee with a split of 47.9y (47.6m), bringing the team home in fourth place.

The team was coached by Track Hall of Fame Inductee Jimmy Flynn. The team also won the Middle Atlantic Conference Mile relay Championship with a new conference record time of 3:15.6.
