Hall of Fame induction: 2011

Gil was an outstanding sprinter, going undefeated in the 220yd and 440yd dashes during his entire senior year at Claymont High School in 1955. At the state meet that year, Gil set meet & state records in both races covering the 220 yards in :21.8 and the 440 yards in :50.9 on cinders. He also won the New Castle County 220yd and 440yd dashes. At the University of Delaware, he was undefeated as a freshman and anchored the mile relay team to the first win at the Penn Relays since 1935, while winning the Middle Atlantic States Conference Championship.

Bill was an outstanding thrower at Mount Pleasant, winning the Delaware state high school shot put championship in 1967 and 1968. His 58’6” in 1968 set the state high school record. Track and Field News listed a 58 footer of his in March of 1968 as fourth best school boy throw in the nation. He was happy to contribute to New Castle County and Delaware State Meet Team victories for Mount Pleasant.

At the University of Maryland, he was the indoor and outdoor ACC champion in the shot put in 1972 and 1973 with a best throw of 58’0”. At UMD, he was happy to contribute to Conference victories for the team; which became part of an extraordinary run of 24 consecutive ACC Team championships for the Terps. Bill also helped out with the discus, with a 161-9 high school best and a collegiate toss in the 140’s. Bill attributes any and all of his track and field accomplishments to the dedication and patience of Rod Lambert and Bill Crowther.

A sportswriter who has covered Delaware cross country and track & field for over 40 years, the Philadelphia Inquirer, Delaware State News, News Journal, Delaware Today and other periodicals. He has served as toastmaster of over 70 track & field and cross country banquets, was president of the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association for 15 years, provides legal help to the track coaches association and constantly advocates for the sport. He ran the two mile at Tower Hill School and Haverford College.

Ralph coached at Salesianum for thirty years in outdoor track and field and eighteen years in cross country with several years of helping with the indoor program. In cross country, he had 12 county and 16 state team champions, 8 individual champs, 32 First Team All-Staters, and 7 county and 3 state Coach of the Year Awards. His dual meet record was 120-10 including 71 wins in a row. In outdoor5 track and field, his dual meet record was 119-52, with seven county and nine state team champions, numerous state individual champions and state records, and five county and three state Coach of the Year Awards.

In 2001, the National Federation of High School Coaches Association named him the Boys Track and Field National Coach of the Year. He continues his involvement as the Salesianum Invitational Meet Director, as a member of the state track and field committee, and as an official at the Penn Relays and other area meets.

Sally was an outstanding hurdler at Brandywine H.S. and in 1979, she won the 100m hurdles at the state division II championship and won the same event at the Meet of Champions. That same year Sally won the 100m hurdles and the 400m dash at the county meet. In 1983 while attending Princeton, she ran in the NCAA 400m intermediate hurdles finishing ninth in a time of :58.19, a time that remains the Princeton record. She won six Heptagonal championships, sweeping both the 100m and 400m hurdle events in 1980 and 1981. Later, at the TAC Championships, she ran :58.71 in the semi-finals, just missing qualification for the finals. She won the von Kienbusch Award for the top senior sportswoman at Princeton. In 1984 she competed in the Olympic Trials running :58.42 in the 400m hurdles.
